For fans of Tom Misch, Hall & Oates and Charlie Puth
It's with great pleasure that we bring you todays Inbox Interview featuring singer songwriter, JJ Bloom.
Hailing from Co. Meath (Ireland), the talented musician - real name Conor Mc Quaid - creates a feel good Pop/Contemporary R&B sound, skilfully blending in elements of Funk, Soul and Classic R&B.
Having already achieved some notably impressive things already in his music career, Conor has recently embarked on a new solo chapter in his life under the alias 'JJ Bloom'. We caught up with the man himself to find out more...
In just one sentence, explain your sound…
It’s pop music but with a bit of groove.
So why the name JJ Bloom?
I was making funky music that deserved an equally funky name. Myself and two friends (Conor Noone and Seán Hayes) sat down and came up with some terrible names, until we landed on it! It seemed odd at first but I had seen so many american artists do it, so I thought why not?
What is your real name and where are you from?
My real name is Conor Mc Quaid, and I’m from Co. Meath, Ireland.
Your debut single ‘Always You’ was released in April 2020 - what inspired you to write the song?
I was at a part in my life where my career path, personal life, and style of music was all changing. When everything settled into place, this song came out. It essentially created JJ Bloom.
You also produced/mixed the single - what was your favourite part of the process?
I’d probably say the production on the backing vocals. I had a very clear vision of what I wanted them to be as I was writing the track, so it was great to see it come to life.
You were previously a member of Irish production Dúlamán, reaching the TV finals of Das Supertalent and signing a Sony Music contract - has this experience shaped your music today, and if so how?
I wouldn’t say it’s had a huge effect on my own music but it did definitely help with the business side of things. I got to experience the big shows, press and tour life in general. Of course, working under a big label was very eye opening as well.
What have been your top 3 career highlights so far?
I would say performing on Germany’s Got Talent, recording an album with Sony Germany, and my debut release ‘Always You’ being featured in Hotpress Magazine.
The music industry can be an incredibly difficult place, what are some challenges you have had to face so far?
It’s tough financially as an independent artist to try and get exposure. I would say that the biggest challenge is getting people to hear your track, as a new artist.
What can we expect from a JJ Bloom live show?
Once things clear up, I can’t wait to get out gigging. You can expect a full band and a guaranteed boogie.
If you could support any band/artist, who would it be and why?
I would say Tom Misch. He’s a huge influence to my music and listening to his album geography is the main reason my sound is what it is today.
Who are 3 other bands/music artists that we should all go and check out?
Dan Elliot, Elkin, EMR.
What’s next for JJ Bloom?
I’m only new, so my main focus is to get more singles out as soon as I can. Once everything settles down, I’m looking forward to getting out and gigging them.
And so concludes our interview. A huge thank you to Conor for his time - we absolutely cannot wait to see what's next in store for this up and coming artist...
